These policy actions coincide with the rise of the budget and inmate numbers as can be seen that the DOC budget went from Wisconsin’s 7th largest expenditure in 1989 to it 3rd largest in 2009(Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, 2010). One solution suggested to reducing the budget is to try to reduce the number of people being returned to prison without a new sentence as in 2014 they made up 42.9% of prison a dmissions (WI DOC, 2014) some of these have been for technical violations such as showing up late for a meeting with a parole supervisors. The suggestion to reduce these prison admissions would be for sanctions courts to be set up which don’t send the parolee back to prison for technical violations straight away but rather sanctions them with actions such as electronic monitoring, counseling or community service, a similar program to this has already been tried in

Serial Killers Essay Example

Serial Killers Paper Michaud, in â€Å"The Hollow Men’, states that 1999 was the year of the murderous moral imbeciles, with the likes of Killer kids, the janitor at Yosemite, the ‘Railway Killer’ Angel Maturino Resendez, Mark Barton, and the deranged bigot Buford Furrow, to name a few. I say a few because, there remains an undisclosed number of cases still to be zeroed in.   The name of Ted Bundy stands well above the rest. A handsome, well educated psychopathic law student, Bundy would stalk young women; win their confidence, before murdering them (Michaud, 2007).Though many revelations have elucidated serial killers as habitual or addicted murderers, who show no remorse to refrain from indulging in their sadistic rites, there have been cases of some psychopaths refraining from their continued activities approach the police and confess their deeds. The mental state of these serial killers is quite intricate and psychologists work continuously in an effort to reveal this mystery.D rug abuse, diminished mental state, personal tragedy, and the likes are causes attributed to such behavior. The law has been constantly working overtime to bring as many sinister offenders to book and their efforts are beginning to show. The number of related cases has shown a marked decrease, yet there remain a number of files, that has accumulated dust over the years.The Serial Killer-An AnalysisSerial Killers use various techniques to kill their victim. Clubbing, stabbing, and strangulating are common methods used to kill their victims, some just butcher their unsuspecting victims. The motive and sadism were also quite different for each one of them. Mike DeBardeleben, a sexual sadist said that he found no greater power over another person than inflicting pain on his victims, mostly women.â€Å"To force her to undergo suffering without her being able to defend herself thrilled me. The pleasure in the constant domination over another person is the very essence of the sadistic dri ve† (Michaud, 2007).Ted Bunty was a very bright and handsome person. For this reason, he could attract women without much trouble. This, he used to his advantage in luring women to him. He would pick up young college women who looked quite similar to the young woman who broke off her relationship with him. What led this innocent-looking well-mannered psychopath to commit such heinous crimes?Just before his execution, Ted Bundy granted an interview to psychologist James Dobson. He was executed on January 24, 1989. In that interview, he described the agony of his addiction to pornography. When he was thirteen years old, Bunty came across a few dirty magazines near his home. He took an instant liking to it. This made him seek more magazines and hire videos that showed violent images of women having sex. Gradually, he experienced deep pleasure in seeing women being tortured and murdered. His addiction to sex and violence grew and this fueled the terrible crimes he committed (Dobso n, 1995).He was a very clever killer, using his countenance and skills to perfect alibi. He would fake a broken arm in a sling to convince young women to help him carry his textbooks to his car. Once in his comfort zone, he would batter them with a baseball bat and take away to secluded placed for his ghoulish rituals.In his interview to Dr. James Dobson, he related his actions to kill to, â€Å"a compulsion, a building up of destructive energy.† Alcohol also was a factor that made him act this way, he said. â€Å"In conjunction with my exposure to pornography, alcohol reduced my inhibitions and pornography eroded them further† (Dobson, 1995).â€Å"The F.B.I.’s own study on serial homicide shows that the most common interest among serial killers is pornographers. It’s true† (Ted Bundy in an interview to Dr. James Dobson).According to Ted Bunty, the initial sexual encounter that he had with his victims was more or less voluntary, as the victim would sense danger if otherwise. However, such sexual overtures did not satisfy the full spectrum of desires that he intended. The helpless, motionless victim would re-kindle his desire to ‘possess’ her. He would abuse the victim before strangulating her. The word, possess, is central to all his crimes and this distinguishes him from other criminals, deviant or otherwise.Bundy desired a lifeless female form; comatose or dead. Possession meant a lot to him. Just before his execution, he admitted to keeping some of his victims in such a state for hours or days before disposing of them. He buried most of his victims in shallow woodland graves, only to revisit them often. So possessed was he of his victims that it was found that one of his victims was found in the frozen mountains of Utah in a post-mortem shampoo state, and another was found with fresh application of make-up before being discarded. â€Å"If youve got time, they can be anyone you want them to be,† he told FBI agent Bill Hagmaier.â€Å"Murder isnt just a crime of lust or violence. It becomes possession. They are part of you You feel the last bit of breath leaving their bodies Youre looking into their eyes A person in that situation is God!† (As told to Bill Hagmaier by Bunty in an interview in the 80s)On January 15, 1978, Lisa Levy and Martha Bowman were mercilessly raped and later clubbed to death by Bunty. Lisa Levy was raped, strangled, and beaten on the head, while Bowman was strangled with a pair of pantyhose and severely beaten on the head.  Neither had struggled. Bunty had taken his weapon with him so that no evidence was left at the crime scene. Police searched for clues, apart from the description given by Nita Neary, who saw a stranger run away from the scene of the crime. They found some blood smudges, a few print smudges, and sperm samples, but none of them could be linked to the killer. It was only a piece of evidence that became the centerpiece during the tri al: an odd bite mark on the left buttock of Lisa Levy.  Ted Bunty was very severe on his victims, getting thrills at seeing his victims suffer physically. In his act of perversion, Bunty had bitten Lisa on her breasts and buttock. The bitten mark on her breast was of less impression than the one on her buttock. During trial, the state called Dr. Lowell Levine, the chief consultant in forensic dentistry to New York Citys Medical Examiner.  He testified that the victim had to be lying passive for the marks to be left as they were, and also pointed out that odontology had a longer legal history than most people realized. For Bunty, he was known to be possessive of his victims, and he could have done this damage after immobilizing Lisa. The counter was perfect and impressive for a witness.Along with the eyewitness testimony of Nita Neary, this evidence was good enough.   Bundy was found guilty and sentenced to die in the electric chair.   This was the first case in Floridas lega l history that relied on bite-mark testimony, and the first time that a physical piece of evidence was linked to Bundy (Ramsland, 2007).Resendez is another serial killer who is sexually motivated. He was charged with killing as many as nine women in four different states, and of rape of another. There is also word that Resendez was known to have had sex with one of his victims even after murder. In almost all cases, there is a strong bond between sex and murder. Are the words of Ted Bunty true in connecting sex to murder? Cary Stayner is another who is accused of brutally dispatching four females at Yosemite, two by strangulation and two by slitting their throats, decapitating one, and nearly decapitating the other (Michaud, 2007).Forensic psychiatrist Park Elliott Dietz of Newport Beach, California, says that most mass murders are committed by the depressed and the paranoid, who see themselves as the deliverer of good, angrily lashing out at a world they fear and hate.Roy Hazelwood spoke of Harvey Glatman, the Lonely Hearts Killer of the 1950s. According to Hazelwood, Glatman, who was executed in 1959, would incapacitate his victims in their apartments, then bind and transport them out into the desert, where he would finally kill them. â€Å"He could have raped and killed these women in their apartments; instead, he kept them alive at increased risk to himself. He enjoyed the thrill of knowing the risk he took by keeping his victims alive for so long,† said Hazelwood. Glatman enjoyed the power to possess and the power to destroy (Michaud, 2007).

I will learn how to deal with confrontation, be brave to express how I feel and what I think.  4. In the future, I will learn to express myself clearly and to give useful feedback. Make disclosures clear. Dont assume that others understand what I think, feel and want; no one can read my mind! Avoid unnecessary misunderstanding.  5. Because of the element of risk, disclosure in a relationship should occur gradually. In the future, I should not confide intimate details about me immediately upon meeting someone. Rather, I should reveal a little at a time as I come to trust the other person. 6. Self-disclosure is an important skill. It increases our mental and physical health. Overwhelming data from therapy, self-help groups, and research labs suggests that sharing our emotions improves our health, helps prevent disease, and lessens our psychological- interpersonal problems.(Bolton, 1986, p.182)  7. There is a wholesome cycle involving self-disclosure, friendships, and self-acceptance. First, it is usually helpful to tell the person you are interacting with how he/she is affecting you because sharing your intimate feelings and thoughts usually deepens friendships. Thirdly, as you feel better about yourself, you can self-disclose even more of yourself, leading to closer, more enjoyable relationships. Fourthly, with more feedback, greater security and self-acceptance, you are able to look deeper into yourself and solve more problems.(Nelson-Jones, 1986, p.54) 8. Having a good self-disclosure skill not only can enhance relationship but also can make effective communication. If we disclose well and get feedback from others, we can be more self-aware and develop a positive self-esteem. Our empathic listening skill might also be enhanced. On top of that, the Logans had financial problems and mortgage problems. People had to face the consequences without hardly any money. Black people had to pay their mortgage at the bank but the white people employed at the bank just caused more trouble. This novel examines many issues for example: courage, bravery, prejudice, the power to succeed and the strength to survive. Black people have known that courage comes only to those who earn it. Friendship is an important part of life. You need people to look you up to, someone on your side so you can be brave and someone you can depend on for giving you advice if youre in trouble. You will hardly ever see any black people and white people, as thats the way life was. Jeremy was a good friend of the Logans. Jeremy Likes T. J and the Logans Tree House and their generosity and friendship. Some white people would be scared of some blacks. I know this because of when Kaleb Wallace gazed up at Mr Morrison, then at the truck as if trying to comprehend the connection between the two. The major conflict in this story is when two white children beat up T. J and accuse him of robbing a store. The two children were the actual robbers with stockings over their faces. Then the white children go to T. Js house and tried to hang and burn his whole family. The Logans try to stop this by setting fire to their own cotton field so everyone will stop to put the fire out before it reached their own. Luckily, the lightening had struck the cotton field. This was the turning point in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Everyone stopped what they were doing just to put out the fire, including the whit people. They all worked as one without hate or dislike. This would also be considered the resolution because the prejudice is gone for a moment. The falling action is when the fire is out and everyone goes home. Mama had explained that we have no choice of what colour were born or who our parents are what we do have is some choice over what we make of our lives once were here. Something more important in our life is education. There were two separate schools that separated the black children with the whites. Children used to travel by bus, car or just walk. Either way, there could be disaster waiting to happen whilst on the journey. Uncle Hammer gave warnings about these situations all the time. He thought that things seemed worse than usual up there. It gets hot like this and folks get dissatisfied with life, they start looking round for somebody to take it out on. So everyone should be careful and to always be aware of danger. As I read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, I have noticed the particular language that the people use. They use local dialect for when they talk. The local dialect in Mississippi often involves shortening words and blurring words together as well as creating new words, for example: mopin round, cuttin up, bout, farmin, yall. The apostrophes show where letters have been dropped when words are shortened. When T. J talks about friendship in several local dialect speeches. He once said to Stacey, I swear everything I told yall is the truth. I I admit I lied bout tellin on your mama, but I aint lyin now, I aint. People used to talk like this because it was shorter and easier for them to say it. There are several themes in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. One of them could be described as when someone feels that is bad, he can still have the pride of his family and friends. Courage comes only to those who earn it could be another theme. The last theme involves the difficult situation life presents and a need to stand tall. This book, I think, was well written to let people see things through a childs eye and experience their innocence and disbelief in the cruelties of life brought in by racism and prejudice. The lesson I learned in reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is that when people are found to be tough, they can be; especially a child. Sometimes they come out stronger than the adult in one of lifes crisis. There has been a lot of trouble in this book and people like Mama always sense trouble. She says your lucky no worse happened and were glad to have you here especially now. When Cassie had racial situations approach her, she likes to get vengeance and after she had achieved her goal, she tells herself, oh, how sweet was well-manoeuvred revenge. Now you know that if you have an ounce of hope inside you, youll have the power to succeed and all live as one. Sleeping Disorders and the I-Function As we all know, sleep is an important part of our lives. Without the proper amounts and type of sleep, fatigue and other problems can arise. Generally, we can clearly distinguish between a sleeping person and a person that is awake. With sleeping disorders, the distinction between an awake person and a sleeping person becomes more intriguing. What is the difference, how does it relate to the I-function and consciousness? Each sleeping disorder has its own unique answer to this question. It is essential to understand sleep to fully appreciate it. However, many aspects of it remain a mystery. We do have some degree of understanding of sleep. Within our sleep cycle a type of unusual sleep occurs, REM sleep. During this cycle the periods of REM sleep are interspersed with slow wave sleep in alternation. Each period of REM sleep (there are usually 4 or 5 periods a night) lasts for approximately 5 to 30 minutes. During these periods a sleep paradox occurs. An enormous amount of brain activ ity takes place; this is sometimes even more activity then when awake. This clearly indicates that sleep is not simply to rest our mind and not to think. So, during this period our brains are extremely active, yet there is usually no input or output. During this period, along with the random eye movement (REM), there is a complete loss of muscle tone. Essentially, at this point, the motor system is paralyzed (normally the body inhibits any movement). The autonomic nervous system also alters its behavior. The regulation of body temperature is lost and the blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rates shows increased variability. REM sleep can be detected by measuring the electrical activity of the brain with an electroencephalogram. At this point, the EEG will show the same pattern of activity as when the brain is awake. It is fascinating that at this point, REM sleep, where dreaming is frequent, the body shuts itself down. If, as suggested in class, the I-function is active at this stage, it is interesting that all body movement is inhibited. During other stages in which there are synchronized EEGs, and the I-function is not supposed to be present, the body does not inhibit all motor activity. This seems to imply that when the I-function is present it will control the body as it sees fit. One of the more ubiquitous parasomnias is sleep talking or somniloquy.

Anne Frank’s once secret diary has introduced the immense suffering and horror that occurred during the Holocaust. Anne Frank was only thirteen years of age when trouble began to arise. Adolph Hilter’s reign in Germany had become more powerful and people were falling under his evil spell. People were forced to believe that the Jewish race was inferior and needed to be destroyed. It is believed that Hilter hated Jews due to the fact that they were successful in a time where most Germans faced tremendous hardship, therefore jealousy. Jewish families tried to escape to surrounding countries to be safe. Some of Germany’s neighboring countries were sucked into the war and experienced great loss. When things started to get bad in Germany, Jewish families received â€Å"call-ups† in which family members were requested by the Nazi’s. Anne recalled that the first call-up in their family was for her sixteen year old sister Margot. The worried young girl of thirteen stated in her diary that day â€Å"Margot is sixteen; would they really take girls of that age away alone? But thank goodness she won’t go, Mummy said so herself; that must be what daddy meant when he talked about us going into hiding†. The Frank family then proceeded to send their belongings to different friends and neighbors for safe-keeping as they prepared to relocate. They had a detailed plan for going into hiding, from location, to essentials, to receiving goods. They would live in a confined space which they called the â€Å"secret annexe† with the Van Daan family. Thursday, July 9, 1942 was the day the family left for hiding. It was the last of the normalcy Anne knew and the beginning of a long three years in hiding. Anne was a very intelligent young lady and although she had her fair share of crazy ideas, she was quite mature for her age. She had a few close friends and the boys at her school seemed to be pretty interested in her, although she mostly ignored it. Leaving that all behind was hard enough for a thirteen year old girl but to go through one of the most confusing parts of her young life in this new unfortunate situation was even harder. Anne had a close relationship with her father, whom she adored, but not so much with her mother. Throughout many different parts of the story does Anne mention her disliking for her mother, including when she says â€Å"Margot and Mummy’s nature are completely strange to me. I can understand my friends better than my own mother – too bad!(42)† During her time in hiding Anne goes through phases of disliking her mother, disliking her father, and disliking just about everyone in the annexe. Through becoming a teenager she is desperately trying to find herself and her purpose in life. The adults constantly put her down and make her feel stupid. Anne writes in despair â€Å"If I talk, everyone thinks I’m showing off; when I’m silent they think I’m ridiculous; rude if I answer, sly if I get a good idea, lazy if I’m tired, selfish if I eat a mouthful more than I should, stupid, cowardly, etc., etc.† She feels very putdown and discourage by the people surrounding her 24/7, that is until she finds comfort in Peter. Peter Van Daam was hardly of any interest to Anne upon meeting him but as the days dragged on in the secret annexe she finds herself intrigued by him. After spending some time together they develop a deep friendship, which leads to a loving, intimate relationship. Peter is Anne’s stronghold; the one person to get her through each and every day.

DISCUSSION How Biomass Works Solar panels, hydropower, and wind turbines are all well-known renewable resources. However, one of the most prevalent sources for energy is often overlooked. Biomass is a renewable and sustainable energy resource that uses organic materials to generate electricity. (Biomass Power Association.) Biomass energy is made from any form of previously-living material. This includes any animal material or product, all vegetation, and even human waste. Scrap lumber, forest debris, crops, manure, and even industrial wastes can all be utilized and turned into renewable energy through biomass. Often leftover materials from factories such as paper mills are used to help sustain the renewable resource. However, this process tends to be inefficient and unreliable (Mary, Booth), so frequently biomass energy is instead produced by cutting down forests or converting crops such as sugar or corn into combustible fuels. Biomass is considered a renewable resource because organic material and waste will al ways exist. Whether this is through forests, crops, or animals, as long as humans inhabit the earth there will be waste to utilize.
